Yes, the Volex cord sounds a bit dark and bass heavy in my experience at first.

It does open up nicely. I think it is a great option up from stock 18 ga cords.

I used the Pass and Seymour plug, but kept the molded IEC connector. I did keep the grounding and drain wire connected. I used it on both digital and analog gear.

I would say break in with normal listening is 80-100 hours.

Check out the Ven Haus designs. I noticed from your posts above you have some non grounded components. This may well be a factor for you in choice of cord for a specific component.

I am just now trying the Flavor 2 for my MF A300 integrated and it is very, very good and is easily better than the Volex design for the A 300.
