Yes, Kamala Harris faced criticism for her office's use of prison labor during her tenure as California Attorney General.

In September 2014, Harris's office argued in court against the early release of prisoners, citing the need for inmate firefighting labor. This labor program involved qualified inmates volunteering to receive training from Cal Fire and working as firefighters for approximately $2 per day, plus $1 per hour when actively fighting fires.

When this argument drew public backlash, Harris stated she was unaware her office had made the filing and later distanced herself from the position.
