Ukraine was always just a means to an end, namely weakening Russia.
We love dictators, we've overthrown popular governments and installed guys who make Putin look like FDR, so aiding Ukraine sure as shit had nothing to do with the "future of democracy," especially when there's little to no democracy right here at home.
Maybe we're supposed to hate Russia because there aren't enough investment opportunities there, or maybe it was just another way to launder money to well-connected corporations here at home.
Whatever. It was inevitable that the US would leave Zelensky at the altar as if we were Julia Roberts in some stupid rom-com/Michael Bay mashup. First there are a lot of explosions and then we're the runaway bride.
