it's intermittent within a range of needed temps going higher than required then turning on when it's a bit low.

This is if you don't have some kind of new fangled kind that I am unaware of, in which case no wonder they don't last very long. All of mine do this. Obviously there is power needed for the circuitry but it's a small current draw compared to when it's 'on'.

I don't use my fridges to go online, monitor the front door, mow the grass, or tell when to shower
