First time gardener. Tell it to me straight. Save me from deeper trauma.
Started with my strawberries. First ones this season were better than sex. Scrumptilumptious. Then the slugs came for my strawberries. Whole armies. Every single strawberry now has big gashes where the slugs dove in for a snack.
Then they came after my kale. While I'm sorting kale leaves for dinner, a large spider made a dash for freedom. Glad he got away! They probably don't taste good. Then after a high velocity cold water spray, I chop up the big leaves and find a large green caterpillar. Tossed him back onto my lawn.
Now I'm thinking there's gotta be more bugs. But I can't see 'em even with my reading glasses. So I gets out my best magnifying glass. Zeroed in on a tiny beetle no bigger than a speck. Maybe a tick. Tweezers to get him off.
After intense inspection of every chopped leaf, I decide against stir fry. Thinking I better boil the kale, so I can properly see and remove any remaining bugs as the pot boils. Sure enough, the bodies of two tiny white caterpillars come floating to the surface of the boiling water.
Brave man that I am, I ate the kale anyways, knowing I might have swallowed a few bugs.
Did have one success with snap peas. No bugs on them at all, and they were delicious in a stir fry. Still too early in the season to harvest my remaining vegetables - lettuce, spinach, collard, chard, zucchini, broccoli, onions, and tomatoes.
How do you expert gardeners fight off the bugs?
