And not just bad winters growing up but also oil shocks. Remember when Nixon ordered gas stations closed on weekends? Hell, even before that, they weren't open 24/7. We wanted to visit our relatives in Indiana PA or take a trip to Sea World, we had to plan ahead.
As an aside, my ex-wife was a great one for ignoring the low fuel warning and running out of gas. She drove past three gas stations on her way to work and back and that was the problem. She drove past.
One time she ran out of gas on a blind turn during a snow squall.
