When I have a couple of possible unnamed, unspecified "inside" contacts on one side, and three justices (from different political persuasions) of the SCOTUS on the other, I think I know whom I'm going to believe.
If it was contacts however, then I think that they leaked the information (whether true or not) to get an advantage for "their" political side. However, they did not expect to be contradicted by three SCOTUS justices, and when they WERE contradicted, then perhaps they didn't get as much political benefit as they expected. Of course, this is all entirely speculative in any case.
