Once it all came crashing down, somewhat in WWI and then definitely in WW!!, it was a crushing realization. The US, after the heady (and, of course, false) belief that it had God-on-its-side, engaged in post-WWII world control and butchery that only became of concern when it began actually to lose these contests.
Meanwhile, people in the other 200+ nations realized that two nations, the USSR ("Hope for the little man!") and the US ("Beacon of democracy!") were not only engaging in a Cold War that threatened their very existence, it also threatened the existence of every nation on earth.

Global warming. Yes, a very, very serious problem. Time has passed for an entirely satisfactory resolution. But these are not end times. They only are so if we BELIEVE they are. Then, we have zero chance of survival.
