I never really understood it. It was never a major part of our budget. Higher fuel prices CAN make the price of a lot of other things go up, but that hasn't always been the case. One thing people tend to believe is that the evil oil companies are just profiting and screwing all of us.

My career was spent in several areas of oil and gas production. We had producing fields and refineries. The price of oil went up, production side won, refineries lost. The price went down, production lost, refineries won. Overall it was a wash for the company.

OPEC on the other hand usually wins, but that won't last. As we use less and less oil, the Middle East with little else going, will revert back to what it was. Their fortunes will slowly dwindle. That's why they try to set prices. They know it won't last forever. They could probably kick ass with solar, but it's hard to export.
