People need it to exist. Can't say the same thing about any of the Olympic sports. Same with politics; we need it. I'll let the fast food thing go.
You're comparing apples and oranges anyway.
The worst, abso-fucking-lutely worst argument for prizing billions out of local economies that should be spent on local needs is the old "these athletes trained for this!" When the games were held in Rio, they tore down neighborhoods where poor people lived in order to build playgrounds for those athletes to show off their years of training. I'm sure the folks who got displaced were happy, right?
IMO, any politician or civic "leader" who suggests bringing the Games to their city should be tarred and feathered and run out of town.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
