The Inuits had packs of Malamutes that protected their villages from bears, moose, etc. The great things about Malamutes is that they love humans but are predatory toward other species.
Also, Native Americans used deadfall traps to catch bears.
But I'm sure that once in a while a bear got the better of a brave.
