Yeah, I can't remember the last time I've had to dial the leading "1".
I've been entering 10 digits for years.
There was a time a couple of decades ago when "the phone company" and the FCC wanted to have new phone number area codes assigned without regard to location. A '214" number could be in McKinney, and a "972" number could be in downtown Dallas. Off the top of my head, I think that's the last time the townsfolk rose up and said "NO!"
As a result, a 214 number is in the "interior" of the Dallas area, a "469" number is from the northeast Dallas metro area, and a "972" number is from a "ring" (I think) around Dallas.
You would think that such a simple and logical system wouldn't have required hundreds of millions of taxpayer's dollars to arrive at.
