the dollar has lost value in my lifetime and costs go up. We see it all the time with our Audio stuff. I have a pure class A amplifier that would cost me 20-30k to replace if something happened to it, so I am ready to maintain it with all the parts I need if the need arises. It cost at the time about 2 grand, the same as the competition. There is absolutely no technical or audible reason to replace it with anything that might sound as good or end up a hair different.
That's a twenty year difference on the amps, but the cars? The car co.'s haven't followed the usual inflation figures so they cut cost with anything CHEAP including labor. Forget the upper crusty's to cut their 401 contributions and stock options.
I bought one new car in 1988 for 22k and I loved it for 25 years. The 2020 model would be maybe 25-35k but it would not be the same quality unless it was 40-50k and I would only be able to add tire pressure to it. No wonder Carvana is so popular today.
