I believe that most car manufacturers are using QNX, at least the last I heard they had majority market share. QNX is an RTOS (real time operating system) that is phenomenally reliable. All modules are standalone and if any fail it is restated quick enough to not impact whatever it is controlling. Yes this wouldn't address the Vette problem, it was in response to the stacked algorithms.
I do agree with you about the loss if tactile feedback, not the brakes so much, but the steering. I've had one car with electric steering, and rented and was loaned others, none of which I liked.
