RE: It's getting harder to find brass fittings on a garden hose

Brass is a copper alloy. Copper prices have been extremely high in recent years. The desire to keep prices down for consumers will drive manufacturers to use cheaper materials.

Another issue is that standard brass is usually an alloy of recycled materials. The copper used may have some lead residue from soldering. Health regulations in some states may prohibit the use of brass containing lead. Brass that is certified lead free is much more expensive that regular brass. The use of the cheaper alloy side steps the issue and can allow sales of the same product in all states.

As posters have noted, there are solid brass barbed fittings available with garden hose ends that can be added to your existing hose. You can then make your own call on the lead/unleaded debate. If you go this route, avoid using the stainless steel band clamps unless you keep a box of band aids near by the faucet. I have used Oetiker ear clamps for plumbing and compressed air applications and find them reliable and safe. I use a pair of nippers to compress the ears on the clamps.
