RE: In my case I was focussed on recording for Artsound FM using their gear.

The AKG C-414 is a great mic for certain solo instruments and voice. But as an ensemble recording mic, it's limited since it is a large-diaphragm mic. This adversely affects the quality of the off-axis sound, both source and ambient.

You'll be better off with a 1/2" diaphragm and first-order cardioid pattern - much smoother off-axis response which is more consistent with the on-axis response. There are several on the market. My personal favorite which I own are Schoeps dual-pattern condensers. They're extremely high quality mics, and I can use them as the situation dictates: widely-spaced A-B in either omni or cardioid pattern, as well as ORTF and X-Y, and as a solo instrument mic in either omni or cardioid pattern.

Other very high quality mics to consider for ensemble recording include DPA, Earthworks and Sennheiser, among others. At a lower price, Rode and Shure have some very nice models as well.
