I've played a Strat straight through someone's high-end stereo, a long time ago. It sounds really bad. Ear bleeding bad.

Pedal guys have been making analog-style OD stomp boxes for a long time. I'd say the Ibanez Tube Screamer and Matchless Hotbox are about the best at simulating tube tones through a solid-state amp.

Problem is... the tube amp is not an on-off switch. You can alter the OD and harmonics by finger touch and other articulations. On demand, and faithfully --- throughout a song.

Very hard to do that with a pedal and a solid-state amp. Not with that degree of control.
