Adams, Jefferson, Livingston, Sherman and....Franklin.
The document that is the Declaration is the kernal, the gold center, the beating heart about which this nation became formed. But I also like to recognize some of the spirit behind it.
The unwillingness to pay an unreasonable tax to King George III. A desire to rid ourselves (yes, us, we, all of us over here)of any tyrannical rule from across the Atlantic. Even if we kind of did (really did) owe some funds to the King for his military support during that last French/Indian war.
It was rebellious, to be sure. They (we) were insurgents. Rebels. Rascals and a rowdy unruly lot of misbehavers who wanted to pursue our own livelihoods unperturbed. (From a certain point of view)
I think if you look at the major colonies that made up the British Empire, ours departed the most from English culture. We divorced ourselves from Great Britain in the eighteenth century. And over the next century developed a culture of our own that is less like England than any of the other colonies. We are less like England than is, - say - British Columbia in Canada, or Australia. Yet we have much in common with those two former colonies. We all share a common heritage of English ancestry which in many ways define us as members of the same tribe. We are indeed family.
