Black Background

A recent photo-oriented post made note of a black background for certain photography.

IMO, a good idea. But waiting around? Not my style. Using a black fabric than working it over a little in 'post' works for me. For photographing 'small' objects? 1 yard or so and a support 'stick'. A volunteer to hold it up and get it a foot or more in back of the subject. For subjects like this I always adjust to F8 since that is the sweet spot of many lenses. Unless you read a test where they say F5.6 or perhaps f11 produces 'better' results. At that point? Let depth of field be your guide. Try to shoot at a lower ISO to minimize digital noise. Noise is NOT the same as film grain.

The trick is the ratio of light on the object to how much light the background sucks in. Once you are past the dynamic limits of the sensor, the background will simply turn black.

Like this, maybe. I HOPE your monitors are properly adjusted. Knowing the Photoshop verb 'Levels' helps as does the touch up stuff I do with a LITTLE sharpening and some Vibrance / Saturation. I cut image size down to 8'x12" raising the pixels to nearly 300 per inch, which is perfect for printing. If I started with the camera 'RAW' image, I might be somewhat better off, but for a little show and tell? This will certainly work.
Too much is never enough
