Mexico is a, or rather CAN be a dangerous place for Gringos.

My Mexican MIL picked up some cash at her bank. 3 mintues later, a guy comes up, sticks a GUN (illegal in Mexico) in the window and demands the purse.
All occupants of car were Mexican or naturalized US citizens born in Mexico.

Obvous 'inside' job or they really had the place staked out. Either way, the cops should be capable, but are NOT. Fairly good at taking reports, though.

Bullethead, if you ever go to Mexico, NOTE that all armored car guys wear MAJOR Bulletproof vests, carry shotguns or HK91 or HK93 military arms. These guys Don't Screw Around.
Tourists are Victims waiting to happen. I stay out of the place even though everyone I'd go with speaks perfect, local dialect Spanish. Riding the public bus is a particular thrill.

If you want a better 'latin' experience? Maybe Costa Rica. Nice place. In Mexico? I liked Santa Maria Huatulco. Get away from the tourist areas and live quiet. I suspect the wealthy have a nice enclave which is where I'd target my house search.
