My mom was rather open-minded too. Although she didn't like me growing my hair down to my waist, she didn't threaten to throw me out of the house for doing so.Speaking of the house, all the neighbors thought she was insane for allowing me, at 14, to paint my bedroom black, install a blacklight, put up day-glo posters, mattress and box spring on the floor, etc. Now that I think about it, she even made me black curtains for my windows on her sewing machine. Just a bit of harmless artistic expression, and in retrospect, I'm proud of her for not giving a damn what the neighbors or our more conventional relatives thought of her parenting skills.
The only thing she gave me much grief about was playing my music too loud. I'm sure it sounded pretty awful on the shitty suitcase stereo I had back then. But the next year, even with her meager income, she did buy me a used system consisting of an Eico tube preamp, a pair of Heathkit W-5 mono amps, and an AR turntable. I only wish I'd had sense enough to keep it, but a few years later the lure of a solid state receiver was too strong.
The only time I really remember her putting her foot down, as far as risky indulgences went, was when I was 15. I met a couple of guys in a submarine sandwich shop who were headed for some weekend music festival about 350 miles from where I lived. They had room in their car and they invited me to go. I guess me taking off for four or five days, unprepared and last minute with two older guys I didn't even know, was over her line. I can't say I blame her, but I've always kinda regretted missing what turned out to be Woodstock.
Thanks for the topic.
