In the new BMW speak, the evens are largely two doors (2 series, 4 series, 6 series) while the odds are sedans (3 series, 5 series, 7 series). There once was a two door variation of the 7 series logically called an 8 series (840,850).
I say largely, because the 1 series has both configurations and the evens offer four door "Gran Coupes". :)
