I'm not in SF but we have a Yamaha gas generator in the garage, propane heaters, and a big UPS backup for my internet router / phone system.

If we lose power, I have at least 4 - 5 hours of internet & phone from the UPS backup. When that's depleted I have several more hours of phone & internet via my smartphone acting as a wifi hotspot along with a handful of USB battery chargers to keep the smartphone charged.

I also have a large AGM battery under my desk which can be used to power a USB charger but it's main purpose is to keep my HAM Radio running as sort of a last resort for emergency communications. Plus I have a few portable handheld radios.
