While voting is 'compulsory' here, few defaulters are prosecuted and most people > 90% vote.
The law was democratically passed by the Federal parliament long ago.
All voting in Australia is run by the independent, and transparent, Australian Electoral Commission.
Here in the ACTerritory, and in the State of Tasmania, we use the Hare-Clark preferential system which is so scrupulously fair that it's a bit tedious waiting for the results to be declared.
Canberra is a top-down planned and spread out city within the ACT. Consisting of separate 'townships' with bush-land and former farms / grazing properties in between. These now turned into nature reserves and national parks. Hence the tendency to bush-fires!! ? 18 Jan 2003 / search here.
Often called 'the bush capital' I call it 'the bush-fire capital'. I used to lead one of the local Community Fire Units, CFU 22.
The townships, North to South, are Gungahlin, Belconnen, Canberra (which includes the Parliamentary Triangle,) Woden, Weston, and Tuggeranong.
We live in Tuggeranong, in Kambah. There are two separate 'historical' villages Tharwa and Hall, as well.
For more on 18 Jan, 2003? Search IC on my moniker, (fire, Canberra, AND) between 1 Jan 2003 and 31/12/2003, for threads.
