What hurts ALL I/C engines is that you need what in stereo or hifi would be 'dynamic range'.
Automotive diesels, for example, can have a flat torque peak from 1500 to 3500 rpm or more.
This allows very high gearing for maximum economy.
An Engine DESIGNED for maximum volumetric efficiency at a very small range of speeds, and used to drive a genset (alternator?) can have even HIGHER economy. It doesnt' have to be very useful at the speed range expected of an engine GEARED to the wheels.
