Just heard on "The Writer's Almanac" that today is the 90th anniversary of the birth of the writer Gabriel García Márquez.
In and of itself, that's not particularly noteworthy -- BUT, I was amused to hear Garrison Keillor, in his inimatible style, intone that García Márquez was born in Aracataca, Colombia.
At least according to Keillor, "Aracataca" is pronunced exactly as it looks to be pronounced. Philistine that I am, I found that quite amusing.
Sounds like a place Bugs Bunny would name-check. You know, like "Pismo Beach" and "Cucamonga" and "Albuquerque".
Speaking of wry place names -- it doesn't get much better than "Albuquerque", does it? I can spell it, but only after decades of having to look it up every time I wanted to write it down!
all the best,
mrh
