I agree with Jack G

Your brother is a generous guy! That was pretty nice of him. Next year, you'll have to think of something better than a new tie and socks.

Somewhere sometime in the last couple years, I read or watched a comparison of premium priced steaks, including grocery store offerings, and Omaha came in average.

Further, when you go to a grocery store, you have the option of seeing the actual specific product, and selecting the exact ones you want, before you buy. Also, while "Choice" is available at some grocery stores, "Select" can be very good if you choose well. It seems to me that the Kroger and Homeland stores, and their other branded stores, carry a lot of Select beef, and that the SuperValu/Safeway/Albertsons/Tom Thumb/Jewel stores carry more Choice beef. Choice tenderloin at their stores is typically $20/pound, and they'll cut it the way you want, but I also see Choice tenderloin at Walmart pre-cut/packaged for just under $18/pound. (Aside, I prefer a six to eight ounce fillet, 1-3/4" thick - 4 oz is just too small.)

Next, a 4 oz hamburger? That's not "bad", but when I make burgers on the grill, they're 6 oz of 80-85 percent lean meat, AND, they're the thickness and size that I want, and four of them takes one pound of beef at $4-$5 a pound (or less if it's on sale). (At this moment, I have three pounds of 80% in the freezer, which I got at $2.99/lb.)

So far, we're at $18-$20 for four 4 oz Choice tenderloin fillets, and $5 for six 4 oz burgers, for a subtotal of $23-$25.

Yesterday, I bought a 10 pound bag of Russet potatoes for $2 (on sale), normally $5. I prefer Russets for smashed potatoes, but use red or Yukon Gold for other styles. So, now we're at $25 - $30, and I've got an extra 8 pounds of potatoes.

Chicken: Can't imagine eating chicken fried chicken unless I'm on a pseudo-health kick, and I guarantee you that one 4 ounce portion will NOT be enough for the average guy. Chicken fried steak... now that's a different story - I'd eat that every day if I could. Ten ounce, please.

So, even with the holiday special and discounted shipping on your order, $52 dollars seems a bit high for what you get.

And remember: 6 - 8 ounce Choice tenderloin fillet, 1-3/4" thick. I'll take mine medium to medium rare, please.

:)
