RE: Thanks, REL

Bill, oh, no offense taken at all. I fully understand that most people are not inclined to carry a gun with them. Even many who own a gun and keep it at home for defense of hearth and home are not predisposed to take it with them when they are out.

I also understand that few people share my background and point of view. Others may be offended if someone takes exception to them being armed but I am not among that number.

I was raised way out in the country. I mean WAAAAYYY out in the country and I was going hunting with my father by the time I was 8 years old. He was a wonderful husband to our mother, a terrific Dad to we boys, and a quiet and gentle man.

However, when it came to the handling of firearms he was a strict disciplinarian. He tolerated no unsafe handling of guns. He constantly drilled SAFETY into our heads. Muzzle discipline (ALWAYS keep the muzzle pointed down range away from people). Trigger discipline (NEVER put the finger on the trigger until all is clear). And of course the most fundamental safety frame of mind of all: ALWAYS assume a gun is loaded and dangerous and never point it in the direction of a person.

Part of our culture was a respect of others and their property. Family loyalty was also part and parcel of our upbringing. The fierce confrontation of anyone threatening/harming one's wife and/or children was considered a proper course of action. Thus, by logical extension, such a duty to afford that protection to one's family while away from the homestead was viewed as not only normal, but expected.

My father has long since passed (Oct. '83) but the values which he instilled in me are to this day such an integral part of my deportment that I still feel sometimes that he is just behind me, looking over my shoulder. Oh that sometimes that were true. I still miss Dad after all these years.

In sum, I am quite aware that most are not like me and see things differently. This is to me, hardly a cause to take offense, but rather a chance to share views, seek common ground, display mutual respect, and hopefully, part friends. You sir I'm convinced, are the sort of man which would do the same. I thank you for affording to me a chance to share my views without being set upon by an unreasonable scolding or being lectured to.

The respectful way in which you set forth your thoughts leads me to believe that if you should ever travel through my area, that we could meet, share stories of wonderful tube gear, listen to some thrilling LPs, and even partake in a wonderful meal. (sans weapons of course). Should fortune so dictate I would consider it a blessing.

thanks for listening,
roN
