RE: NOTE TO ALL

G’day,

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

Even though my comment about you not drinking was somewhat tongue-in-cheek it was actually based on what you wrote and have written in other posts.

I felt sure you were the type of person who took their responsibilities regarding firearms seriously. I also felt quite sure you wouldn’t be out & about imbibing in alcohol whilst wearing a sidearm.

I like a drink and do so often. However I don’t get drunk or anti-social etc. We were out last night. We went to a cocktail bar for pre-dinner drinks and then proceeded to the restaurant. We get limos when we go out as it is the most convenient way for us to enjoy the evening without having to worry about transport.

Of course if you enjoy a glass of wine in your own home then that is nobody’s business except your own.

I’m not sure about the difference in civility of the general populace between our countries. However we certainly don’t have the same level of gangs, armed or otherwise, as seems to be present in the USofA.

Although I do entertain a few American business people over here and they all comment on how friendly Australia is… or more correctly how friendly the people are here. By the same token, my parents, sister and several close friends have travelled throughout the USofA extensively and they say exactly the same thing about Americans ;)

I do think we have less violence in our schools than you guys. (Please this does not meant we don’t have incidents in our schools but anecdotally it seems less here)

I think most crimes here are somehow drug related. But of course we still have our opportunists and career criminals as well as the odd low-life psychopath.

The behaviour of our police here I think is completely different to over there. The only place you might find uniformed police at a restaurant, café, diner, eatery etc etc is McDonalds or maybe other fast food places (I don’t go to them so I’m not sure).

I have never seen a uniformed officer eating in a restaurant.

I frequent a local bakery/sandwich shop and police often go there for a take-away meal. Half the time the uniformed officer in the shop is unarmed BUT the other officer in the car is armed.

Our uniformed officers do carry a firearm but it is rare to see them armed in a shop unless they are there on official business. I have had detectives here on a few occasions and they were unarmed (they may have had guns in the car)

I know several police officers and most of them leave their gun locked up at the police station when they ‘knock-off’ work.

To answer your question directly. Yes, I would feel uncomfortable with an armed, uniformed or plain clothes, police officer eating in a restaurant I was dining in.

Rightly or wrongly I think many folks in Australia would be uncomfortable with someone openly carrying a sidearm into a restaurant where they were dining.

I am very pleased you took no offence at my post as I can assure you none was meant.

Again, I respect your right to carry a sidearm. I merely expressed a view which in contrary to yours but please realise it is contrary based on legal and cultural differences between our countries.

I hope you find the rather long-winded above to be informative.

Lastly, your post prompted me to ‘google’ info about Virginia. Another very interesting place in the USofA I’d now like to visit :)
