An obsession? Of course!

But like all collections and all things worth collections, a collection becomes part of who you are. A small part in most areas, but concerning music, a collection represents what I like; or what any music collector likes...as long as he is a MUSIC collector, not solely a RECORD collector.

I have the ability, with this large collection, to pull out THE LP or perhaps the same composition that someone speaks rapturously about on AA. All of my records are TO BE PLAYED, not just to sit there, so if someone mentions Mahler's 3rd, I can get a copy of it if I'm so inclined. If someone mentions James Moody, I can grab a James Moody LP to listen to. THAT is why I want everything, to be able to do that.

As for cataloging, I type very poorly. You'd think with all of the writing I do I'd get better at it, but NOOOOOOO! To get in touch with my collection, on a mental AND physical plane, is why I'm doing it. At 5000 I could tell you about every LP I had, after about 7000 I lost complete touch with it.

One of the main reasons I'm doing it now is to find some Jazz LPs that have been lost, hopefully by misfiling and not by sticky fingers. Every time I go through my collection, I cull with extreme prejudice, keeping only the rare and good (not necessarily the same, of course, some good stuff definitelty isn't rare).

But, if I don't find the Sonny Rollins/McCoy Tyner/Ron Carter "Milestone Jazz Stars" then I know someone thought they needed it more than me and I have to go buy another as there is a performance of "Naima" on that LP (2 record set) that's "to die for".
****
If I had more money I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LPs!
