I know of what you speak...

I have one of those prefab hearth slabs. And yes it does look like
some pretty inert stuff. The best sounding thing I used was a
kitchen cutting board I found at Targete (french spelling).
It made little to no sound when whacking it with you knuckles. It
was lightweight and it came in black. It was a pain to cut down
to size though. My jigsaw blade kept melting already cut areas.
Nonetheless, it actually worked quite well as a plinth. I used
your bag of sand idea to dampen the vibration on my Denon DV2200
DVD player until I got one of those GutWire Notepad thingies...

RE: Set and forget tables are for non-audio folks

Ever since I sold the SOTA and bought the Technics 1210M5G I guess
I have become one of those non-audio folks you speak of. Outside
of cleaning the needle and the albums, I don't futz with it.
But, I honestly was growing tired of futz'ing with my old table.
I would rather listen to music and drink beer...

Now my obsession has moved onto speaker cables. Currently I am
auditioning some Kimber Kable 4TCs in bi-wire mode. The next
question will be do I sell the Cardas Crosslinks they replaced
or not....
