Sad to say, it's a bit different here. Here, all the power available is sometimes enough. The "merge lanes" do exist, true, but very, very few people will make any effort to make it easy for the merging traffic. Generally, one has to look for an opening and mash the throttle in order to match the speed and slip into said opening.That's assuming that some dickhead in the center lane doesn't take it upon themselves to slip into the opening themselves.
But, this may only be a phenomena here in the greater NYC metro area. I wish we had a more civil driving environment but here it ain't about to be. When I drive in the Bahamas and Barbados I do notice a more civil attitude and respond accordingly.
