... it's never easy to come to terms with having to have a loved pet put down - whatever the illness. When our two dogs were failing - one from kidney failure and the other from cancer - I had to call in the veterinarian to put them down, as the wife could not cope and had left it to me. I cried like a baby...We were moving house soon and decided not to get another dog, so we went out and got another kitty instead - we needed to fill the void - and it was the best thing we could have done, as it provided a focus for the "accumulated pet affection" that builds up after a loss.
I would strongly recommend that you at least consider getting another kitty soon - it'll help you cope.
