Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

People always say that I'm nuts for thinking that way...2 year olds are explorers, questioners!

Directly out of the blob stage where they were able only to observe, at that age they can interact with their environment...the "wonder" that was in their eyes from birth (or shortly after) becomes, "I wonder if...", a very different way of viewing the world.

Yes, they get difficult because they use a tremendous amount of energy and most parents and/or caregivers don't realize they need a lot of quiet time. That quiet time can be naps, but not all quiet time should be! If they're not ready to sleep, they resist your attempts to make them do so. If they're not hungery, the same thing, but hunger is ignored quite often, too!

To judge a kid's moods takes a lot of time and effort, that's why we're such poor parents...WE don't have the energy! So quiet time and nap time is every bit as important for us as it is for a child. We don't want to go to bed because of some TV show or some other reason. We don't want to take a nap because the house needs cleaned or the lawn needs mowed or...

At 2 and 3 a kid starts being exactly like an adult in those ways, but not because of the commitments we've made to job and home but the commitments they've been naturally forced to want...knowledge.

If he/she is crying and they just ate you don't give them more food. If their diaper was just changed chances are it doesn't need changed again. If they awoke from a nap an hour ago they don't need another nap. The only thing left is boredom or frustration; both of which may take some effort by parents to relieve. The truck won't roll properly, fix the truck. The truck is being used like a hammer...get the kid a hammer (plastic ones are recommended at this age).

But that';s why I love that gae, the age of interaction! I have to constantly be thinking to stay even with a kid...they have far more energy, far more inquisitive POWER, so I have to have my brain fully engaged.

That's why parents become so exasperated, that takes a lot of effort. But if you play ya gotta pay. Just think of it as calorie burning on the same scale as the act which created the little bugger...the karate move called the front hip thrust uses X amount of calories. The payment for that act is that the next 20 years takes a whole hell of a lot more coloric metabolization than the 20 minutes of fun!

Just call it the 20/20 rule.
