Weird Wildlife

A weird few minutes just passed. I am pulling nails out of a speaker cabinet, Diego is snoozing on the patio behind me and I hear some gulls kicking up a ruckus. I look up to see what the fuss is, see the gulls soaring way up high and then I see a flock of 60-70 sandhill cranes way above them. The arrival of the cranes is sort of a semi-big deal hereabouts.
Grab the byknockyoulars out of the garage and get to watching the cranes which are circling and can't seem to figure out where they want to go.
This goes on for a few minutes and they eventually drift off to the north and almost out of sight.
I hear a little noise (mew) behind me and I step back and around because I figure Diego is sneaking up on me. He'll do that on occasion.
But nooooooooo. No Diego. But I do almost step right on top of a a European Varying Hare, resplendent in its spring white/grey/brown plumage. Where in the hell it came from I do not know but there it was! They usually give us humans a rather wide berth. We have plenty of rabbits and there's plenty of them because they're too smart to get too close. I have no particular aversion to wabbit stew.
Diego is sitting on the steps about two feet on the other side of the hare - staring. The hare is staring back. This bunny is bigger than he is so I don't think there was any immediate danger to either or any of us.
The hare gives me a long look and then (prudently) retreats back around the corner into the lawn. I retreat into the garage to replace the viewing device, Diego doesn't move.
I come back out of the garage, say something to Diego and turn to see the bunny coming over to see Diego. They're now eye to eye, no more than a foot apart.

By this time we're all freaked. Diego moves back onto the patio looking a little shook up. Mijnheer Hare splits for parts unknown and I just shake my head.

It was almost surrealistic.
