Mix and Match Cell Phones Between Providers?

Is this possible? My wife's phone was stolen but my sister in law and others have offered to give her their old phones. My wife is with T-Mobile but her sister used US Cellular. My wife got a new sim card. Do the sim cards fit in different phones? She can't get a free phone but at least it wouldn't cost a whole lot to get a new one.
