... purchase another piece of audio-related equipment - A Sota RCM...After re-structuring my insurance portfolio (the first time in >30 years) to more closely match my needs at the age of 61, I will be cashing in the investment element and upping the risk cover while keeping the premium constant.
(There's a lesson there for anyone else who has not examined their insurance with a somewhat jaundiced eye.)
The Sota here in SA undercuts the opposition (Moth, VPI and others) by quite a significant margin and, after "test-driving" the VPI and the Sota, both seem to deliver an equivalent result - with the Sota costing the local currency equivalent of ~$690.
I should take delivery this coming weekend and will - after a few cycles of cleaning records of varying degrees of "filthiness" - post a mini-review of my initial impressions (unless there is such a groundswell of "Piss off and post that in Vinyl Asylum - in which case I will sulk for a few months).
Part of the decision is based on having some 600-odd LP's, of which probably 400 are worth keeping, and all - apart from recent purchases - having been stored in cardboard removal cartons for 6-7 years - require serious cleaning activity on my part. (I realise from some dialogue here that this number of LPs is comparatively insignificant - particularly when compared to some you lot and your thousands of disks...)
Being, fundamentally, an idle SOB, there is absolutely no way I am going to clean those 400-odd li'l round black muthas by manual means!!! Hence the decision to bite the bullet and get an RCM.
I did toy with the idea of trying to come up with a gyppo-ed DIY device using an old TT and old vacuum cleaner, but eventually abandoned the idea after a serious attack of "What the Fuck!" got in the way of the project...
So, I now have something to look forward to this weekend and also something with which to keep myself occupied during the coming winter months... :-)
