For the Techies - Web Browsers, Firefox or Explorer?

First off I have to admit that, while I'm far from being computer challenged, I'm not a nuts-and-bolts man when it comes to my computer and software. Which means I know just enough to be dangerous :-)

But I am thinking about changing web browsers. The reason for this is that Microsoft is offering a free upgrade from Explorer version 6 to version 7, and it looks like the new version of Explorer is offering some of the same functionality of Firefox, and ocassionally I have read about the advantages of Firefox. Which leads to the questions: Does Firefox live up to it's hype? Is it going to be significantly better than Explorer and, if so, in what ways?

For the people who dislike anything Microsoft, I understand and feel your pain. For the Mac crowd, I love 'em (I'm a former Mac owner) but the 'ol computer is only a couple of years old and so I'm not going to replace it.
