Cookie Cutters

34 years ago, at the beginning of our sophomore year at UC Santa Cruz, I was introduced to Quyen. Although her family lived in San Jose, she said she was originally from Nha Trang, Vietnam. She claimed that it was a "beach resort town." While going to the McHenry Library, we searched for the Geography section, and looked for books and maps of Nha Trang.

Anyway, the next year, Quyen moved off-campus. It turned out that, amongst our friends, she was the best cook. Her housemates would buy or provide groceries, and three times a week, Quyen would cook dinner (the leftovers could be used at any time thereafter).

One time, we were low on ingredients, so we decided to make pizzas. But oops, we did not have shredded cheese. We did have a block of cheese, but no grater.

No problem. Quyen just shrugged, pulled out some cookie cutters, and used those, on slices of cheese.

Quyen taught us to use cookie cutters for cute little pancakes, mini-sandwiches, eggs, and even watermelon shapes.

Our friend Tuyet was an art major. She used cookie cutters as stencils, even for tracing on pumpkins. And, since she had clay, Tuyet used cookie cutters, to make ornaments. We did not have wax, but Tuyet mentioned that a cookie cutter could be used to mold a candle.

And as an audiophile, you placed cookie cutters on top of speakers and components, to see if they made any sonic differences.
