Re: Vintage Amplifier Prices

Can I use the term “high end vintage”?

These are always going to cost a ton and there is always going to be a market for Marantz 8’s and 9’s, or anything Mac with a tube. The build quality on these “high end vintage” was very high to begin with and there are not going to be any more. It is simple supply and demand. The supply is very limited and the demand is not. The prices will always have an upward trend. But please don’t buy these for an investment. They were not made to set on a shelve. If you are lucky enough to get one play the damn thing!

As for the lesser tube amp? Well certain ones with lower build qualities (but good sound qualities) like the ST-70 are going to have a following but for the most part these lower build qualities amp were just not built to last 30, 40, 50 years. They need TLC to keep operating. I believe that many of the $100 - $200 amps you are talking about are not going to be able to remain stock or anything close to it and continued maintenance costs is going to be substantially more than any appreciation they will have so these are probably not a “good” investment. However remember H-Fi is supposed to be for fun and if you enjoy working on or modifying an old tube amp, hey go for it and count yourself ahead of the game. Really how much fun can you have these days for a couple hundred dollars?
