The 202 has 6BQ5 outputs doesn't it? If so then that could be one reason why it sounds better to you than the 299D.
I still have a 299C and I gave the 299D away so I know what they sound like. Good but not good enough. Like I replied to Charles, the 299 with 7189A's ( higher plate voltage versions of the 6BQ5) and SC35 with 6BQ5's are real nice sounding if you have efficient speakers. Otherwise the poor things are straining and go under too fast to enjoy. Of course when I offer opinions I am talking about equipment that I have rebuilt to original schematic ( no mods) and is working properly with my personal favorite caps or mix of caps. I see little point in offering staunch opinions of equipment in unknown operating condition, other than it works. The Dyna stuff was rebuilt too and other than the little 35, I just don't care for it.
