Re: Harmon Kardon x30 series (actually 430)

I have the 630 and the power amp section is good enought to use as a separate component. The tuner is quite decent and the preamp pretty good. The preamp of the 1060 is a very good and good enough to use as a separate component. I've wanted to get my hands of a 1060 to try it in lieu of the 630's preamp. Pull the preout/main in pins on each unit. Feed the tape output of the 430 into the tuner input of the 1060 and the preout of the 1060 into the power amp of the 430 and compare the preamps. If the amp in the 430 is as good as the 630 and preamp is about the same sonically, then I suspect you'll end up with better sound with the 1060/430 combo and possibly as good as many separates for a fraction of what they generally cost. The 630 does very well into 4 ohms while quite a few of the Marantz amps of the vintage of the 1060 had difficulty at 4 ohms so it may also be a consideration.
