RE: Any decent sounding portable CDP like Sony discman?

I bought a D5 when they first came out. (I still have it in its box in the basement.) I always thought it sounded flat and sort of "dead". (Its motor was also noisy.) But it's from the very early days of DACs, and I imagine its brick wall filter is at a pretty low frequency.

I did hear a story once that the head of Sony at the time (early 1980's) came to his engineers with a demand. He had a block of wood, with a top surface the size of a CD case, and he told his engineers to build a CD player no larger than that. He even signed the block so they couldn't substitute a larger one. The result was the D5. Not sure the story's true, but I wouldn't be surprised.
