A number of the older units were very well designed, and as a few posters mentioned could probably hold their own against today's models. Let's start sharing brands and models.
NOW - lets get to the something I feel is REALLY important - getting them AND keeping them "up to snuff". Just looked at the manuals for a few early / mid 70's units. First of all they CAN BE SERVICED. In most cases, very easily, as they are "modular" in construction, with the modules easy to get to - along with most of the parts on the modules themselves. For the FM portion - ceramic filters were beginning to be used in the IF sections back then and these can stay in tune indefinitely, eliminating the need for aligning the more critical portion of the circuit.
Most of the parts with the exception of certain semiconductors ARE obtainable. Feel free to change out the electrolytics. If you find/can audition and get a "keeper" you could probably keep your keeper going till the power companies phase out AC.
