Your comments on the sinuses are spot on!
There's also a big difference between hearing good enough to enjoy the music, and hearing good enough for diagnostics of your system.
We forget that in the past, the optical edge track on motion picture film was only good to about 8 kHz. Yet, we enjoyed the movie and never noticed the cut off of the higher frequencies. Tap dancers had sharp taps, musical parts sounded right, and gun fire was convincing enough to support the action on-screen.
