I only have a very basic understanding of how they derive TRMS. In the past it was done differently. My HP 339A does it with a light bulb. I shit you not, it is an incandescent opto coupler. They need one because it is floating and it needs to be in a bridge for the notch filter. Ain't many other ways to do that without DSP.

What I REALLY want to know is exactly how an HP 412 works. Friend of mine has one and it is accurate as hell even compared to a Fluke 8842. But HOW ? I have every shred of information on it that can be had on the net and they just do not tell you exactly how it works. Some basics maybe, but not why the hell it is so much better to do that than just a regular VTVM. And if you look it up, note the date. Damn.
