From a certain point of view, most speakers in the 1960s weren't yet full-range, so if you could, for example, improve a circuit's stability by sacrificing a little HF extension or save a little money on a transformer by making some compromise on bass response, it probably made sense. Driving speakers beyond their operational bandwidth heats them up without any particular sonic benefit.
