You can actually go up to 50% over with no problem and sometimes you have to order to get caps to physically fit.Caps of the same value you are replacing are many times much smaller than the originals were when the unit was made.Receivers that I get with 6800uf cap[s,I typically replace with a 10,000uf Nichicon,Philips,or Panasonic.It's most important to get good quality caps.
On the tube amps,I replace 40uf sections with 100uf so you have judge every case differently.20uf I replace with a 50uf. I typically go 2.5 times the original except off a vacuum tube rectifier.
