There's nothing wrong with using a 15 or 20 A fuse, I suppose

As long as the equipment is working properly. [smiley face goes here]

I was taught to use a lower amperage fuse when bringing old tube equipment from a long slumber, say a 1 A instead of a 2 A, and always use a variac. I tend to tread with caution. Replacing smoked caps is easy enough, but those output and power transformers can get expensive!
