I can't begin to tell you how many times I have deluded myself. It's nice to have a disinterested party check what you think is an improvement. I used to shanghai my teen aged girls into listening tests. Both could hear well, and the older one has perfect pitch. I'd make some changes, and often they'd say, "Dad, I don't hear any difference". And then, suddenly, I couldn't hear any difference, either. It was single blind; but it worked pretty well.
